What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring group of minerals that can be found in various parts of the world in rocks and soil. In the 1800’s, asbestos was found to be effective in resisting heat, nonconductive, and remained strong against a variety of chemicals. All these factors were conducive to creating an insulating material and was incorporated into drywall, flooring, roofing materials, floor tiles, textiles, and even cement. For decades, asbestos materials were produced and installed before health issues arose and bans on the product were put into place.

Colorado law mandates testing for asbestos when removing certain building materials from a structure. In 1989, national legislation was passed restricting the use of asbestos containing materials, such as new asbestos products to the market as well as their processing and distribution. However, this legislation did not prevent all asbestos products from the marketplace and asbestos materials can still be found in structures built after 1989. It’s important to have a licensed and certified asbestos abatement contractor to correctly and safely complete the project.
